Amid an outbreak of Marburg virus in Rwanda, travelers coming into the United States who have been in Rwanda in the previous 21 days will be screened starting next week, the US Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will issue its second-highest level of travel notice for Rwanda, asking people to avoid all non-essential travel due to an outbreak of the Ebola-like disease called Marburg in the east African country,

The East African country continues to investigate the source of the outbreak, first traced among patients in health facilities.

Rwanda declared an outbreak of the highly contagious Marburg virus​, a deadly hemorrhagic fever that has no authorized vaccine or treatment.

Marburg virus is named after the town in Germany where it first emerged. In 1967, there were simultaneous outbreaks at laboratories in Marburg and Belgrade in Serbia (then part of Yugoslavia). The outbreak was caused by African green monkeys imported from Uganda for use in experiments. Seven people died.

Rwanda says that eight people have died so far from the highly contagious Marburg virus. The announcement comes just days after the country declared an outbreak of the deadly hemorrhagic fever that has no authorized vaccine or treatment.
