Northumbria Police said a woman in her 90s and another in her 80s died after a BMW that was reported stolen crashed into Highcliffe Care Home in Witherwack.

Two people have been arrested after a car crashed into a care home during a police chase. Eight people were taken to hospital after the BMW, allegedly stolen from Newcastle crashed through the wall of Highcliffe Care Home in Witherwack, Sunderland last night.

Two elderly residents have died after a stolen BMW which was being pursued by police crashed into a care home, a force has said. Highcliffe Care Home in Witherwack, Sunderland, had to be evacuated following the serious collision which caused structural damage to the building at around 9.40pm on Wednesday.
