Martin Lewis has taken to social media to give his advice - and it applies to customers of all energy providers

Consumer champion and Money Saving Expert website founder Martin Lewis has delivered a timely message to Octopus and other energy customers after the new Ofgem price cap increase. The Money Saving Expert's words come after average bills climbed to £1,717 from October 1.

Ofgem’s energy price cap has risen for the winter with customers now facing a £149 yearly increase on average. The cap has gone up from £1,568 to £1,717 – an increase of 10 per cent. It will come into effect from 1 Octover and will remain at that level until the new year.

The average driver will now pay roughly £1.30 more to charge their car at home, or as much as £27.30 extra per year

As of today, a typical household will pay £1,717 a year for their energy bills, following a rise in the “price cap”. This is an increase of £149 over a year – or around £12 a month – the energy regulator said – meaning households can expect to pay more for their energy this winter than they paid since July.
